A hand tool that shapes wood by forcing an angled blade over the surface with muscle power alone. Its flat sole guides the cutter to skim down only the high spots of an uneven board, so repeated passes leave the surface flat; block, smoothing and jointer planes each carry the same idea through a different stage of the work. Introduced When (Circa)Roman era; the earliest surviving examples were unearthed at Pompeii 1 OriginRoman planes already closely resembled the modern design, an iron blade wedged into a wooden body wrapped in iron top, bottom, front and rear.
