Float (Woodworking)

A woodworking float, also called a planemaker's float, is a tapered, flat, single-cut file, made in two types: the edge float and the flat-sided float. Both are traditional woodworking tools most associated with making a wooden hand plane, used to cut, flatten and smooth key surfaces of the plane body by abrasion, though the float's uses extend well beyond planemaking to other fine shaping work in wood.
