Also called a scratch gauge, a marking gauge is used in woodworking and metalworking to mark out lines for cutting or other operations, scribing a line parallel to a reference edge or surface for use in joinery and sheet-metal work. It is built from a beam, a headstock that slides along the beam and locks in place by a screw, cam lever or wedge, and a marking implement, typically a pin, knife, pen or wheel, fixed to one end of the beam.
