Dibber

A dibber, also called a dibble or a dibbler, is a pointed wooden stick used for making holes in the ground so that seeds, seedlings or small bulbs can be planted. Dibbers come in a variety of designs, including the straight dibber, the T-handled dibber, the trowel dibber and the L-shaped dibber.

Eighteenth and nineteenth century farmers used long-handled wood or metal dibbers to plant crops, one person walking ahead to make holes and a second following to plant and cover the seed; the dibber did not become a manufactured item until the Renaissance, when some were made of iron to penetrate harder soils and clay. 1
