A scratch awl is a woodworking layout tool, a steel spike sharpened to a fine point, used to scribe a visible line or mark a single point that a hand saw or chisel can then follow. It is generally preferred for laying out and dimensioning along the grain, while a marking knife is favored for marking across the grain.
