Router

A router is a power tool with a flat base and a rotating bit that projects past the base, driven by an electric or, less often, pneumatic motor, used to rout, or hollow out, an area of a hard material such as wood or plastic. It is used most often in woodworking, particularly cabinetry and moulding, and some woodworkers consider it one of the most versatile power tools they own. It can be used handheld, with the bit pointing down into the work, or mounted upside down in a router table, with the bit projecting up through the table for the work to be fed against it. This entity is distinct from the hand-tool Router Plane, already live on this atlas: the router is an electric or pneumatic power tool, the router plane a hand tool pushed by muscle alone, though both cut a recess into wood.
