Marking Knife

A marking knife, also called a striking knife, is a woodworking layout tool used to cut an accurate, visible line into a workpiece that a hand saw, chisel or plane can then be guided by when cutting joints or performing other operations. It is generally favored for marking across the grain of the wood, while a scratch awl is considered better suited to marking with the grain.
