End-Grain Cutting Board Pattern

Woodworking Patterns

A wooden cutting board built so the end grain of the wood, rather than its long face grain, forms the working surface, made by first gluing strips of wood into a larger blank, cutting that blank into rows, and reassembling and gluing the rows with alternating orientation, commonly into brick, checkerboard or diamond patterns. Because knife cuts fall between the wood's exposed fibers rather than across them, an end-grain surface is more forgiving to knife edges and better able to self-heal small cuts than a face-grain board, at the cost of a more involved build.

Facts
Origin
A construction technique rather than a historical folk pattern, distinguished by orienting the wood's end grain upward for its knife-friendly and self-healing surface properties. 1
Distinguishing Technique or Result
Glued strips are cross-cut and reassembled with alternating grain orientation, most often in brick, checkerboard or diamond arrangements, so the finished surface shows end grain rather than face grain. 1
