Dobby Loom

Spinning and Weaving Tools

A dobby loom, also called a dobbie loom, is a floor loom in which a mechanical device called a dobby controls the raising and lowering of the loom's shafts, each carrying a set of warp threads through heddles, to open the sheds through which the shuttle passes. A dobby loom can weave more elaborate patterns than a simple treadle loom but fewer than a Jacquard loom, and the device first appeared around 1843, decades after Joseph Marie Jacquard's own pattern controlling mechanism. The name dobby is said to come from draw boy, the weaver's assistants who once pulled the draw threads that dobby mechanisms later took over.
