Dandy Loom

Spinning and Weaving Tools

A dandy loom is a hand loom fitted with a ratchet and pawl mechanism that automatically advances the take-up beam each time the weaver moves the sley to beat up the weft, sparing the weaver from having to wind the cloth roller forward by hand. In 1802 William Ratcliffe of Stockport patented a dandy loom with a cast-iron frame, and that cast-iron design became the type used in the small dandy loom shops that grew up around it.
