Whip Cracking

Whip Cracking, known on Wikipedia by the single word Whipcracking, is the act of producing a cracking sound with a whip, a skill originally developed for driving livestock and horses that has since become a practice in its own right, distinct from the live Trick Roping entity already on this atlas. Rhythmic whip cracking is a traditional folk performance in several Germanic and Central European regions under its own local names, including Goasslschnalzen among Bavarian communities, Aperschnalzen in the Alps, and Ostorozas among Austro-Hungarian communities, and the skill lives on today across several distinct settings: as a performing art, as part of the rodeo show tradition in the United States, as an organised competitive sport in Australia, and as a fast growing activity in the United Kingdom that itself crosses the boundaries of sport, hobby and performance.
