A performing art, and also the name of the weighted equipment used for it, in which practitioners swing tethered weights through rhythmical and geometric patterns, sometimes singing or dancing while they do so; poi can be made from various materials and may incorporate fire for effect. The practice originated with the Maori people of New Zealand, where it is still practiced today, and has since gained a following in other countries, an expansion that has led to considerable evolution in the styles practiced, the tools used and the meaning of the word poi itself.
