A traditional Japanese skill toy, consisting of a handle called the ken, a pair of cups called the sarado, and a ball called the tama, all connected by a length of string, that has grown in modern times into an organized skill sport and competitive discipline with world championships and formal rules. Kendama is the Japanese version of the classic cup-and-ball game, and while its own origins are disputed, it is generally believed to have arrived in Japan during the Edo period, spanning 1600 to 1868, likely carried along the Silk Road from China, before taking shape as a distinct Japanese toy in the seventeenth or eighteenth century; the modern kendama shape still used today was created by Hamagatsu Ekusa in 1919.
