Sword swallowing is a skill in which the performer passes a sword through the mouth and down the esophagus into the stomach. It is not swallowing in the ordinary sense, since the natural muscular actions of swallowing must instead be suppressed to keep the passage from the mouth to the stomach open for the blade. The practice is dangerous and carries a real risk of serious injury or death.
