A performing art in which audiences are entertained by tricks, effects or seemingly impossible feats achieved through natural means such as sleight of hand, misdirection, optical and auditory illusion, hidden compartments and specially built props, distinct from supernatural magic, which claims genuinely supernatural causes. One of the oldest performing arts, its modern entertainment form was pioneered by the nineteenth century magician Jean-Eugene Robert-Houdin, reached a commercial peak in the Golden Age of Magic when performers such as Harry Houdini filled theatrical venues, and continues today on television and the internet through performers such as David Copperfield and Shin Lim.
