Woodworking Vise

Woodworking Tools

A woodworking vise, also spelled vice, is a clamping tool built into or attached to a workbench and shaped to the particular needs of woodworkers, holding a workpiece steady either directly in its jaws or pressed against bench dogs and holdfasts set into the benchtop. Woodworking vises are generally sorted into front vises and end vises by where they sit on the bench, and range from the simple leg vise up through more elaborate shoulder vises and patternmaker's vises, each trading off cost, versatility and ease of installation differently, with a bench's dog holes commonly spaced three to four inches apart to fit whichever accessories the vise style calls for.
