Ohio Star Quilt Block

Fiber Patterns

A pieced quilt block built from a nine-patch grid in which the corner and side units are formed from quarter-square triangles, producing an eight-pointed star effect within a square block. Stars of this general form appear in American quilts well before the specific Ohio Star name is recorded, including examples associated with Martha Washington and Dolley Madison; quilt historian Carrie Hall's 1935 pattern index lists the same block under several regional names, including Texas Star, noting that the Ohio name reflects no particular claim to regional origin. The block was especially popular among Midwestern pioneer quilters.
