Overlanding, also called four wheel drive or 4WD touring, is self reliant overland travel to remote destinations in which the journey itself, rather than any particular destination, is the principal goal. It is typically carried out with mechanized off road capable transport, ranging from bicycles to trucks, with camping as the principal form of lodging, and trips often last from months to years and span international boundaries. The term itself is historically Australian, originally denoting the droving of livestock over very long distances to open up new country, and its modern recreational sense has grown out of that older overland droving tradition into today's hobby of self equipped, long distance vehicle travel.
