A long, vigorous walk on trails or footpaths through the countryside, pursued for pleasure and supported today by numerous hiking organizations worldwide. Walking for its own sake developed as a pastime in Europe during the eighteenth century, though long walking journeys as religious pilgrimages are far older, and the activity carries different regional names: hiking in Canada and the United States, rambling, hillwalking or fell walking in the United Kingdom and Ireland, bushwalking in Australia and tramping in New Zealand.
