A form of outdoor recreation involving overnight stays away from home in a basic temporary shelter such as a tent, a recreational vehicle, a cabin, a hammock or no shelter at all, distinguishing it from a day trip or a picnic. Camping became popular first among wealthier travelers in the early twentieth century before spreading across income levels, and campers today frequent national and state parks, wilderness areas and commercial campgrounds, with organizations such as Scouting using it to teach self-reliance and teamwork.
