Bushcraft is the hobby of practicing the skills needed to survive and thrive in a natural environment using few or no manufactured supplies, encompassing activities such as foraging for wild food, hunting, fishing, firecraft and knot tying. Practitioners work to build real competency with basic tools, chiefly knives, hatchets and saws, using them to construct shelters, tools and even canoes from materials found on site. Two related, narrower terms sit alongside bushcraft: woodcraft, which concentrates specifically on woodland and forest survival skills, and fieldcraft, which denotes the military or tactical application of very similar skills rather than the recreational pursuit of them.
