Exploring abandoned, hidden or normally inaccessible manmade structures, often abbreviated urbex: shuttered factories, empty hospitals, defunct amusement parks and decommissioned transit systems among the favored sites. Photography and documentation sit at the center of the hobby, with explorers motivated by historical interest, architectural appreciation and the visual record of decay over time as much as by the visit itself. Most exploration involves trespass on private property and real physical hazards, unstable structures and toxic materials among them, which keeps the hobby's legal and safety standing contested even where the exploration itself is careful and non-destructive.
