Seichi Junrei

Outdoor Wayfinding and Exploration Hobbies

Seichi junrei, literally pilgrimage to sacred places, is a Japanese term for a form of pop culture and film tourism in which fans of anime and related media visit real world locations used as settings, backgrounds, or inspiration for their favorite series. The seichi prefix distinguishes this secular fan practice from religiously significant Japanese Buddhist junrei, and locations can include backgrounds and settings, places that inspired a character's name, or sites that merely share a name with a character or series; enthusiasts who engage in the practice are called seichi junrei-sha. Japan's central government, along with local chambers of commerce and business associations, has promoted the practice, alongside the related terms anime tourism and contents tourism, as a way to draw visitors to the regions surrounding these sites and stimulate local spending.
