A group of sports and hobbyist pursuits in which participants use a map and compass to navigate from point to point across unfamiliar terrain as quickly as possible. The activity grew out of late nineteenth century military land navigation training and now takes several forms, foot orienteering being the most common alongside mountain bike, ski and trail variants, with competitors using specially prepared topographic maps to find a course of control points.
