Stitch holders are tools used in knitting to hold open stitches when they are not currently being worked by the needles, with locking and ring types the two most common. They are commonly used when finishing a side of an item such as a sweater and preparing for the kitchener stitch, and can hold stitches separated from the needle when a piece is being split; for example, when shaping the neckhole of a sweater, a stitch holder is placed on the group of stitches used to make the neckhole while the needles continue the stitches on either side.
