The earliest calligraphic writing usually cited is Chinese oracle bone script, incised on ox scapulae and tortoise shells for divination in the Shang dynasty, characters that were sometimes brushed on before they were carved. 1
Origin
Calligraphy has no single point of origin: writing systems, and the deliberate art of forming their letters well, developed independently in separate civilizations, from Chinese oracle bone script to the Latin alphabet, which first appears in Rome around 600 BC. Edward Johnston, whose foundational hand began the Western revival mentioned above, is regarded by historians of the craft as the father of modern calligraphy. 1
