Bonsai

Bonsai is the Japanese art of growing and shaping miniature trees in containers, a practice with a documented history spanning more than a thousand years and its own aesthetics, cultural history, and terminology developed within Japan. Comparable traditions exist elsewhere, including Korean bunjae, Chinese penjing, and Vietnamese Hon non bo. Practiced bonsai, in the strict horticultural sense, means growing plants in shallow containers under precise pruning and training techniques, distinguishing it from mere miniature houseplants. Practitioners start from cuttings, seedlings, wild-collected specimens, or nursery stock, and use pruning, root reduction, potting, defoliation, and grafting to shape a small tree so that it mimics the form of a mature, full-size tree. The practice serves two aims at once: offering something for an observer to contemplate, and giving the grower the pleasure of exercising effort and skill; bonsai trees are never grown for food or medicine.
