The craft of arranging aquatic plants, rocks, stones, cavework or driftwood inside an aquarium to make an aesthetically pleasing underwater landscape, in effect gardening under water. Aquascapers apply close technical knowledge of plant growth, lighting and water chemistry alongside a designer's eye, trade plants and designs through communities such as the Aquatic Gardeners Association, and enter judged contests; a finished aquascape can carry no fish at all, since the composition itself, not the fish, is the hobby's own focus.
