Angling

Fishing with a hook tethered to a line, usually managed with a rod and reel, to catch individual fish one at a time. The angler casts the baited or lured hook into the water, waits for a fish to take it, then plays and retrieves the line to land the catch, aided by a bite indicator such as a float that signals when a fish has struck. Angling is the principal method of recreational fishing worldwide, distinct from snagging, which uses large multi-pointed hooks to claw into a fish rather than relying on the fish to swallow the hook itself; many recreational anglers now practice catch and release to conserve fish stocks.
