Bolt Cutter

A bolt cutter is a tool used for cutting bolts, chains, padlocks, rebar, and wire mesh, built with long handles, short blades, and compound hinges that amplify the leverage a user applies. This mechanism is highly efficient: a typical bolt cutter can generate about 20 kilonewtons, roughly 4,500 pounds-force, of cutting force from only about 250 newtons, or 56 pounds-force, of pressure on the handles. Bolt cutters are made in lengths from about 12 to 42 inches and with different blade types, including angle cut, center cut, shear cut, and clipper cut, each suited to a different cutting position or material.
