Air Hammer

Metalworking and Blacksmithing Tools

An air hammer, also known as an air chisel, is a pneumatic hand tool used to carve stone and to break or cut metal objects apart. It is designed to accept different interchangeable tool bits depending on the job at hand, so the same powered body can be fitted with a point, a flat chisel or another attachment as the work requires. Because it delivers rapid, powered blows through compressed air rather than through a swung head, it does work that would otherwise take many repeated manual hammer-and-chisel strikes, and it is used across stone carving and metalworking wherever a job calls for that kind of repeated, controlled impact.

Origin
One of two pneumatic devices invented in the 1920s, the stone carver's hammer struck at two to three times the speed of the pneumatic rivet gun and was valued for smooth, rapid dressing of granite and marble; in 1930 F.J. Hauschild adapted the concept into a portable hand-held tool for straightening auto bodies. 1
