A hand scraper is a single-edged tool used to scrape metal or other material off a surface, used where a surface needs to be trued, fitted to a mating part, given the ability to hold oil after grinding, or finished decoratively. Surface plates, the flat reference plates used to check other flat surfaces, were traditionally made by hand scraping.
