In leathercraft, a pricking iron is a handheld tool shaped like a fork that presses a row of evenly spaced dimples into leather, marking out stitch positions a fixed distance apart so they can then be pierced with an awl and hand-stitched. A pricking iron differs from a leather chisel in that the chisel is built to cut the stitching holes through in one motion, while the pricking iron only marks where the holes belong and still needs an awl to actually pierce the leather afterward.
