The shell tool, also called a shell veiner, is a punch-type leather-carving stamp similar to the veiner but carrying a pattern resembling the edge of a scallop shell along its inside edge. It is used to continue the impression of depth already established by the beveler and to suggest a curved surface, and like the other stamp-set tools it is struck with a wooden, nylon, metal or rawhide mallet.
