The background tool is a punch-type leather-carving stamp, struck with a mallet, carrying a crosshatched, checkered or pebbled pattern on its head. It is used to matt down and texture the leather surrounding a carved design, darkening and flattening the uncarved ground so that the design standing above it reads with bolder relief and greater visual depth.
