The Astronomical League is an umbrella organization of amateur astronomy societies in the United States, with more than 330 member clubs as well as individual and patron members. It traces its beginnings to amateur astronomers meeting in New York City in 1939 and was formally established at a convention in Philadelphia on July 4, 1947, when its bylaws were adopted and its name chosen. The League promotes astronomy education, publishes the periodical The Reflector, and runs observing award programs that grant certificates and pins to members who complete specified astronomical observation challenges.
