Gunpla, short for Gundam Plastic Model or Gundam Plamo, are plastic model kits depicting the mecha and characters of the fictional Gundam multiverse created by Bandai Spirits. The kits became popular among mecha anime fans and model enthusiasts in Japan and neighboring Asian countries beginning in the 1980s, then spread to North America and Europe in the 1990s as Gundam itself reached wider audiences through anime and manga. Bandai has sold hundreds of millions of Gundam plastic model units since 1980, with cumulative worldwide shipments surpassing 800 million units by September 2024.
