Cosplayers gather at conventions and dedicated meetups to display their costumes, enter judged contests scored on craftsmanship and performance, and photograph one another in character. The word blends "costume" and "play" and is usually credited to the Japanese writer Nobuyuki Takahashi, who coined it in 1984 after attending a science fiction convention in Los Angeles, though costumed fan gatherings at conventions predate the word by decades.
