Textile crafts built from thread, yarn or fabric worked by hand or with a hand-operated tool: knitting, crochet, weaving, sewing, embroidery and quilting, one of the American Craft Council's own discipline categories and the broadest in this atlas's current holdings. Belongs here: any craft whose medium is spun or woven fiber worked into cloth, lace, stitched or knotted form, and the needles, hooks, looms and frames that support it. Does not belong here: leather crafting, which works a non-woven hide rather than spun fiber, or basketry, whose plant-fiber material is worked rigid rather than pliable.
