The study and collection of postcards. The word was coined in 1945 by researcher Rendell Rhoades of Ohio, working with colleagues at Ohio State University after a postcard-collecting magazine ran a contest for a more scholarly name for the hobby, drawing on the Greek deltion for a small illustrated tablet or card. Because postcards, unlike postage stamps, are produced in a decentralized and unregulated way, identifying a card's place and time of production can be difficult, so some deltiologists limit their collecting to specific artists, publishers, times or locations.
