Element Collecting

A hobby centered on acquiring samples of chemical elements from the periodic table, pursued for reasons ranging from curiosity about unusual applications and interest in elemental properties to amateur chemistry or simple enjoyment. Collectors take different approaches, some seeking high-purity samples and others content to find elements represented in everyday items or compounds, isolating some themselves, such as hydrogen through electrolysis of water, and buying others from retailers who now cater specifically to the hobby with individual samples or complete sets. Many elements are difficult or impossible to collect safely because of toxicity, reactivity, rarity, regulation or short-lived radioactivity, so most collectors concentrate on stable elements, though some pursue radioactive specimens salvaged from antique items or obtained from specialized sources.
