Elegant Glass Collecting

Elegant glass is high quality glassware made in the United States from the 1920s through the 1950s, sold in finer stores as an affordable but still upscale alternative to imported fine china and crystal, and often bought for weddings and special occasions rather than everyday use. Unlike mass produced Depression glass, elegant glass pieces were at least partly hand finished, with makers fire polishing away flaws, grinding bases flat, and adding decorative touches such as acid etching, cutting, enamel decoration, and gold or platinum trim, in richer colors and higher finishes. Most of the companies that made it had closed by the end of the 1950s, and it is today considered by collectors to be its own category, or a subcategory, within the broader Depression era glass collecting hobby, valued for the extra handwork and finish that sets it apart from ordinary Depression glass.
