County Collecting

County collecting is the hobby of keeping track of the counties and other major census divisions a person has visited in the United States, with many collectors aiming for a blackout by visiting every county unit in the country, while others target individual states or simply keep a personal tally. The pursuit has been characterized as a very organized form of wanderlust, and collectors typically document their travels with photographs at county sign markers, receipts, or entries on dedicated websites, with no requirement to prove a visit. The Extra Miler Club, founded in 1973 by three county completionists who noticed the overlap with their license plate collecting, is a nonprofit that meets annually, recognizes completers on its website, and publishes a quarterly newsletter.
