A wire tool, also called a cutting wire, is a length of wire, typically around two feet long, with a simple handle fastened to each end. A potter pulls the taut wire through a block of clay to slice off a workable piece before throwing, and uses the same tool again at the end of throwing to cut through the base of a finished pot, freeing it cleanly from the wheel head or a bat so it can be lifted away.
