A chuck, in pottery, is a separate thrown ceramic form, typically with a wide low base for stability and a narrow flared neck, used to hold a pot steady on the wheel while its base is trimmed instead of centering the pot itself. Resting or fitting the pot against the chuck takes pressure off the rim during trimming, making it possible to true up pots that would otherwise sit unevenly, such as wavy-rimmed or leaning forms, tall narrow shapes, and lidded pots whose flange would be disturbed by direct centering.
